IPL 2022 KKR vs DC Highlights: Delhi Capitals dished out a clinical performance to beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 44 runs in an IPL match here on Sunday. Invited to bat, Prithvi Shaw (51 off 29 balls) and David Warner (61 off 45 balls) struck half-centuries as Delhi Capitals piled up a commendable 215 for 5. In reply, skipper Shreyas Iyer smashed a 33-ball 54 but Kolkata Knight Riders were bowled out for 171 in 19.4 overs. Spin-pace duo of Kuldeep Yadav (4/35) and Khaleel Ahmed (3/25) shared seven wickets between them, while Shardul Thakur (2/30) and Lalit Yadav (1/8) also chipped in. Sunil Narine was the best KKR bowler with figures of 2 for 21.

Wrist-spinners don’t mind a six in the bargain for a prized wicket. Lurks the prospect of the batsman misreading one, or stooping to a folly out of over-confidence. As did Shreyas Iyer, who had just hefted Kuldeep Yadav over mid-wicket to wink a buccaneering half-century. Shreyas uses his feet excellently to hit the spinners. The slightest hint of air and he lashes out on twinkling feet. But Kuldeep did not shorten his length or bowl flat the next ball. He tossed the ball even more, and Shreyas, seized by a (self) destructive spirit danced down the track, but to the find that the ball dipped and spun away from his hideous swish. He scowled in angst, even as Kuldeep punched the air as ferociously as David Warner does. Kuldeep, thus, continued his journey down the redemption road, and the destination does not look so distant.

Some of the more successful batsmen to have tamed Anil Kumble in his prime have opined that the key to chaining him is to play him like a medium pacer. He was quicker than most leg-spinners, used his fingers more than wrists and relied more on over-spin. Similarly, it’s perhaps wiser to deal with Sunil Narine as a medium pacer. The Trinidadian does not bowl as briskly as Kumble, but he sometimes uses the variations of seamers, relying a lot on seam-up and cross-seam variations. Against Delhi Capitals, he unfurled the wobble-seamer too. Hiding the ball behind him as he runs-up, he lets his fingers run through the seam rather than tweak it with his fingers. The index and middle fingers are held wider around the seam, holding the ball with a slightly looser grip. The ball wobbles through the air, before moving off the seam. Batsmen, who look for seam position to judge the turn or movement, are often fooled by the unpredictable nature of the movement. For instance, Lalit Yadav assumed that the ball would turn into him and plunged for the sweep, only that after landing, the (wobbling) ball held the line to trap and hit him around the armpit, to be adjudged lbw.
